What is Migraines & Headaches

What’s the Difference Between a Headache and a Migraine?

Let’s break it down:

  • Headaches are pain or pressure in the head, scalp, or neck. They can be caused by dehydration, stress, poor posture, skipped meals, or even caffeine withdrawal.
  • Migraines are a neurological condition that causes intense, throbbing pain—often on one side of the head. Migraines usually come with other symptoms like:
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells
    • Visual disturbances (flashing lights or blurry vision)
    • Dizziness
    • Fatigue before or after the attack

Migraines can last for hours—or even days—and they’re not “just bad headaches.” They’re disabling, and they’re real. More than 1 in 5 Latinas report experiencing migraines, yet many go undiagnosed or untreated.

Why? Cultural stigma, underreporting, and lack of access to specialist care are all part of the story. We’re often taught to power through the pain—especially mujeres—which only makes things worse.
