Haircare That Gets It: 9 Latinx Brands Embracing Our Curls, Coils & Culture
Finding the right products and techniques for our hair is no small feat. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably tried the different combs, hair wraps, and hair-dunking methods just to get your hair right. But you were likely hoping mass produced products would fulfill your hair needs only to find they didn’t. Thankfully Latinx entrepreneurs have founded incredible hair care brands that understand the uniqueness of Latinx hair and their products embrace your hair’s natural beauty.
Here are 9 of our favorite Latinx haircare brands that bring out our cabello’s natural beauty:
1. Rizos Curls
I always have Rizos Curls stocked in my home. It’s my go-to brand for all curl maintenance. It not only brightens and livens my hair, but it smells incredible. The Refresh and Detangle Spray is a life-saver for those of us whose hair sometimes morphs into a birds nest on our heads, and needs a little bit of life brought back into it.
This brand prides itself on using only naturally derived ingredients and has a long list of ingredients it specifically avoids, such as: sulfates, silicones, parabens, drying alcohols and more.
2. Ceremonia
Ceremonia’s scents bring Latin American heritage to wherever you are. With yucca, guava, aloe and more named among the list of ingredients, Latinos will feel right at home with the Ceremonia brand.
Babba Rivera, the founder, grew up around the haricare business. Her father was a hairdresser who ran their business out of their home, spending hours cutting and braiding hair. Now, she created “nutrient-rich” haircare as an ode to her father. Take Ceremonia’s hair care quiz to find just what you’ll need to turn dry or damaged hair into lucious locks.
3. Suavecito
You’re going to want to stock up on Suavecito products to keep your hair in place and protected. Their incredible pomade isn’t greasy and washes out easily, but it still keeps the flyaways and frizz in place. For those looking to lock in their curls, this is the product for you.
Though the pomade is their top product, they have a long list of items, from heat protectant to an enriching hair mask that I am excited to have on my wishlist.
4. Ocoa
For our curly-haired girlies, Ocoa is for you. Their Styling Trio is the spotlight hair care tool fo those looking to have loose and healthy curls, unweighted by heavy products. Ocoa also has a curl quiz where you can find out just what is right for you identifying your scalp, growth and moisture needs.
The brand touts its use of only natural ingredients, including: apple cider vinegar, sunflower oil, avocado oil, hibiscus, mango butter, flaxseed, and aloe, among others.
5. Tecuane
Tecuane was founded by Anissa Salazar, a hair stylist in the entertainment industry who has more than a decade of experience working with top celebrities. She wanted to bring her Mexican heritage into her work, turning her grandmother’s herbal medicinal practices into a healthy scalp care product.
6. Bomba Curls
This brand was created with curly haired Latinx top of mind. Lulu Cordero, an Afro-Dominicana, wanted to crush the stigma and discrimination around curly hair by formulating products for women with hair just like her. Not only does she offer oils and hair masks to fit their needs, but she also offers hair wraps, pillowcases and scarves needed for that extra layer of hair care throughout our day.
7. Productos Latina
The brand was born out of a Facebook community, Rizos Latinos, for those who were frustrated and struggling to get the haircare they needed for their curls.
Based in Mexico, these hair care gurus offer sets and plans for customers trying to revive and restore their natural hair texture. They have everything you can need for every type of hair to every type of product.
8. Isima
Everyone has probably heard of Shakira’s new haircare line by now and for good reason. The mask, serums and leave-in conditioners are a curly-haired girls dream. Though the product is quite new and the lasting results are yet to be seen, my early usage of the product has been nothing short of exciting. It definitely helps that Shakira’s own head of hair is to die for.
9. It’s A 10
It’s A 10 is everywhere. This was a staple in my childhood home, and still has a hefty presence in my mother’s haircare cabinet. I always sneak some of my mom’s heat protectant and leave-in conditioner whenever I am home and it’s no wonder her hair has always been so strong and silky for decades.
